Book Review of The Impact of You by Kendall Ryan

Needing an escape from her past, Avery chooses a college where no one knows her. Keeping a low profile was the plan, falling for the intense frat boy, Jase wasn’t. Yet she can’t deny how alive she feels when he’s near. Even as common sense implores her to stay away, her body begs her to get closer.
Jase, numb from his own family drama, has grown bored with weekends fueled by nameless girls and countless bottles when he meets Avery. Helping her cope with her past is better than dealing with the bullshit his own life’s served up. Determined to drive away the painful secret she’s guarding, he appoints himself her life coach, and challenges her to new experiences. Getting close to her and being the one to make her smile are simply perks of the job.
But when Avery’s past boldly saunters in, refusing to be forgotten, can Jase live with the truth about the girl he’s fallen for?
Recommended for 17+ due to mature themes and sexual content.

I had such a hard time getting through this one. Right off the bat, it reminded me way too much of Wait for You by J. Lynn.
Avery is running from her past so she goes to a college away from home. Enter Jase, Mr. Man Whore, who has recently "changed his ways" due to a family incident. Through a series of events, they fall for each other and cue secret from Avery’s past… BLAH BLAH BLAH. I thought it was super predictable.
I think the main issue was that I didn’t connect to the characters. Avery is supposed to be this timid girl who keeps to herself and doesn't open up to anyone but here comes this random guy and TA-DA! I found her character to be shallow, boring, and flat. I didn't care for Jase either. He was sort of a douche bag. When he finds out about Avery's past he's an asshole and I found it incredibly hypocritical, when he's a famed man whore himself.
With that being said, I would still give Kendall Ryan's books a chance. I did enjoy her writing and the pacing in the book.
