Published over ten years ago by Ace, Guilty Pleasures marked the debut of a series that was destined to grow from cult favorite to a major New York Times bestseller. Now, for long-time Anita Blake junkies and newfound fans, Guilty Pleasures makes its trade paperback debut. Readers will learn how Anita Blake started raising the dead-and killing the undead. And how she met Jean Claude, the master vampire destined to become not only her biggest nemesis, but her greatest lover...
I mean, listen. If you haven’t at least STARTED to read Laurel K Hamilton’s Anita Blake series, I don’t know what you’re doing calling yourself a paranormal romance fan. Hamilton gives us a heroine who is gritty and polished at the same time.
We follow her struggle to work in a man’s world as the leading US Marshal in paranormal vampire policing. Her nickname? “ The Executioner.”
I love me a good romance, girl, but sometimes its great to fall into a fabulous PLOT too. Through Anita’s eyes, we get to feel a bit empowered, a bit sexy, a bit smart assed, a bit insecure, and a bit terrified.
The setting of Anita’s story is a better and more well written world akin to True Blood. Honestly, this book has done a much better job giving us a story where the world is aware of and policing vampires as citizens. Also, we follow Anita- who is sharp, resourceful, bold, and totally unaware of how hot she is. She is a petite, yet curvy Hispanic heroine who absolutely embodies Shakespeare’s well quoted “And though she be but little, she is fierce.” Oh, and she is also the most kick ass necromancer (read: ZOMBIE queen!)
Yes, she raises friends and family from the dead- just call her agent.
What would a bad ass vampire Executioner be without a tempting male lead vamp??? Luckily, we don’t have to find out…We have Jean Claude: the French- wet-dream of a vampire, who is just delectable in every way.
But, don’t worry; you won’t get bored. I also adore how fast paced it is and how dynamic every single character is. I didn’t even skim. No lie. I also happen to thoroughly enjoy Hamilton’s writing style and the voice she gives Anita. Give me a heroine with sassy one- liners and a take no shit attitude anytime. She also shares my love of coffee and an affinity for stuffed penguins.
This is the beginning of a beautiful affair.
Just go read it. You’re Welcome.
